What is Cardano?

Cardano is a proof-of-stake (PoS) blockchain network platform that launched in 2017 with the aim of introducing change to the way cryptocurrencies are designed and developed.

Armed with a goal to allow “changemakers, innovators and visionaries” to bring about positive global change, Cardano was founded on peer-reviewed research and developed through evidence-based methods.

What makes Cardano so special is that there are many practical use cases for the protocol. Cardano’s use-cases span across education, retail, environment, agriculture, enterprise, and even healthcare. For instance, the protocol presents a blockchain solution which can authenticate and verify the origin and supply chain of medical products, mitigating the risk of counterfeit medicine being administered to patients.

What is ADA?

Named after the mathematician Ada Lovelace, a 19th-century mathematician and computer programmer, ADA is the native token of the Cardano network. The supply of ADA tokens are capped at 45 billion, with 16% of this number allocated to its founders.

ADA tokens can be staked** to earn rewards, and are used as incentives to upkeep the running of the Cardano network. Users can move tokens to an existing staking pool to earn rewards, or create their own new staking pool.

**Staking refers to the process of actively participating in transaction validation on a PoS blockchain.

The total supply of ADA is limited, and capped at 45 billion. Out of the total supply, a portion of ADA was given to IOHK, an organisation which supports the Cardano project. Another 2.1 billion ADA was allocated to Emurgo, an international blockchain technology company that served as a founding entity of the cardano protocol. A non-profit organisation, the Cardano Foundation which works to promote the platform and boost adoption, was given 648 million ADA.

ADA ranks #5 among all cryptocurrencies and has been one of the hottest DeFi tokens in both 2020 and 2021. Presently, ADA is seeing a 14.95% increase in the past 7 days and a healthy YTD gain of around 480%. In the past month, ADA saw its highest prices at $1.19 and lowest price at $0.30 at the end of January.

At the time of writing, ADA traded on Coinhako for $1.03 USD.
