What is Tezos?
Tezos is a blockchain network based on smart contracts, similar to Ethereum. Its difference to other networks lies in their advanced infrastructure which allows the network to evolve and improve over time without needing a hard fork. This resolves problems faced by both Bitcoin and Ethereum since their inception.
People who hold XTZ are able to vote on proposals for protocol upgrades that have been put forward by Tezos developers.
According to Tezos, its approach allows it to be future proof; meaning that Tezos will “remain state-of-the-art long into the future,” enabling it to embrace developments in blockchain technology.
The technology underpinning Tezos was first proposed in a white paper that was released in September 2014. After a series of delays, the Tezos mainnet launched four years later.
What makes Tezos different?
While many blockchains offer staking, Tezos put a unique twist on this process and allows users to be involved with the network’s governance through “baking.” Baking effectively stakes 8,000 XTZ which is meant to create a financial incentive to act honestly.
Bakers are then tasked with voting on proposed changes to the blockchain’s code. The proposals need to receive support from the majority of participants before they are put on the testnet for 48 hours. These changes are only fully implemented once backed by the supermajority.
