What is Monero?

Founded in April 2014, Monero was created to resolve privacy weaknesses found with bitcoin. Its humble beginnings included a small tech community, which later gained traction as the project gained credibility and market share.

Similar to other privacy cryptocurrencies like Zcash, Monero enables the sending and receiving of XMR without making data publicly visible on the blockchain.

A unique fact about Monero is that mining the Monero token (XMR) can be done on a normal computer. This is because it runs on a CPU-friendly, Proof-of-Work algorithm created by the Monero community.

Wondering how Monero maintains such a high level of privacy?

Monero adopts very specific technologies to obscure and protect user data on the blockchain, offering users greater anonymity for their transactions.

How does this work?

Monero uses ring signatures to combine digital signatures of the person executing an XMR transaction with the signatures of other Monero users before recording it on the blockchain. This way, no one is able to tell who the digital signature belongs to.

The use of stealth addresses are also implemented to provide more anonymity. This allows the sender to publish a single address which automatically creates several one-time addresses for the recipient. By using stealth addresses, only the sender and recipient will know when the payment was sent.

Additionally, Monero also leverages RingCT technology to obscure the amount for each transaction made on the blockchain. This protects user anonymity and prevents double spends. Β  Β
